What is Mental Health Occupational Therapy?
Mental Health Occupational Therapy helps you build the practical skills and supports you need to function day to day when mental health challenges are getting in the way.
It focuses on the activities that make up everyday life, including self care, sleep routines, home tasks, work or study demands, relationships and community participation.
Occupational therapists work alongside you to understand what is happening in your routines, habits, environment and roles, then develop a plan that strengthens your capacity, confidence and independence.
Mental Health Occupational Therapy can support people experiencing anxiety and chronic stress, low mood and reduced motivation, trauma related challenges, psychosocial disability, and difficulties with routines, sleep, energy, organisation or social participation.
Mental Health OT is practical, goal focused and centred on what matters most in your daily life.

What To Expect
Starting mental health occupational therapy can feel overwhelming if you are not sure what the process looks like or what will happen in your first session.
Our approach is supportive, practical and focused on your real life goals. We take the time to understand your situation, what is getting in the way day to day, and what you want to achieve, then work with you to build strategies that make everyday life easier and more manageable.
You are always involved in decisions about your therapy, and sessions are tailored to your needs, pace and priorities. There is no one size fits all approach and no pressure to move faster than you are comfortable with.
Step 1 - Initial consultation
We begin with an initial consultation to understand your goals, current challenges and what daily life looks like for you. Your occupational therapist will talk with you about what is most difficult right now, what you would like to improve or work towards, and how your routines, environment and supports are affecting your day to day functioning. If you are an NDIS participant, we will also discuss your plan and goals so therapy can be aligned with your supports.
Step 2 - Assessment
Your occupational therapist completes a practical assessment to understand how mental health challenges are affecting your daily functioning and independence. This helps identify what is supporting you well and what is getting in the way, so therapy can be targeted and meaningful.
Step 3 - Therapy and strategies
We develop a therapy plan that is tailored to your goals and real life needs. Therapy focuses on practical strategies that you can use in your everyday environment to support routines, emotional regulation, organisation, participation and independence.
Step 4 - Progress and reviews
We regularly review your progress and adjust your therapy plan as your needs and goals change. This ensures therapy remains relevant and aligned with what matters most to you. For NDIS participants, this can also include preparing progress reports or functional capacity reports when required.
Benefits Of Mental Health Occupational Therapy
Mental health challenges often affect function, not just feelings. When daily life starts to feel overwhelming, occupational therapy supports the practical skills and structure needed to participate in everyday activities, build independence and regain confidence.
Mental Health Occupational Therapy can help improve daily living skills and self care, establish sustainable routines, strengthen emotional regulation and coping strategies, and increase confidence in social situations and relationships. It can also support a gradual return to work or study, improve organisation and follow through, and build healthier habits around sleep, energy and health management.
The overall goal is to help you function more independently, feel more capable in daily life, and participate in the activities that matter most to you.
