What types of paediatric assistive technology are covered by the NDIS?
The NDIS covers a range of paediatric assistive technology, including but not limited to mobility aids, communication devices, sensory equipment, and home modifications.
Occupational Therapy in the Clinic, School and At Home

Paediatric equipment refers to devices, equipment and systems that support the daily activities of children with disabilities. These technologies are designed to provide assistance and improve the quality of life for children with physical, sensory or cognitive impairments.
Paediatric equipment includes a wide range of devices, such as powered mobility equipment, adjustable and profiling beds and wheelchairs and strollers. These devices are customised to meet the specific needs of each child and can enhance their independence, mobility and overall well-being.
Other important devices that are specifically designed to meet the unique needs of each child include:

We work collaboratively with our clients to ensure that their specific needs and goals are met, they have access to the right equipment and support to achieve greater independence in their daily lives.
The NDIS covers a range of paediatric assistive technology, including but not limited to mobility aids, communication devices, sensory equipment, and home modifications.
To apply for NDIS funding, you will need to meet with an Occupational therapist or other healthcare professional who can provide you with a letter of recommendation for the specific assistive technology your child needs. You will then need to submit this letter, along with other required documents, to the NDIS.
Conduct an assessment: OTs begin by conducting an assessment of the person’s abilities and limitations. This may involve observing them performing daily activities, reviewing medical records, and conducting interviews with the person and their family members.
Identify the person’s goals: OTs work with the person to identify their goals and objectives, such as improving mobility, communication, or independence in daily activities.
Determine the most appropriate assistive technology: Based on the assessment and the person’s goals, the OT will recommend the most appropriate assistive technology or equipment. This may include devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, communication aids, or modified utensils.
Trial the technology: The OT will work with the person to trial the recommended technology and equipment to ensure that it meets their needs and is comfortable and safe to use.
Modify or customise the equipment: The OT may need to modify or customise the equipment to ensure that it is tailored to the person’s needs and preferences.
Provide training and support: Once the equipment is prescribed, the OT will provide training and support to the person and their caregivers to ensure that they can use it effectively and safely.
Monitor and reassess: The OT will monitor the person’s progress and reassess the equipment over time to ensure that it continues to meet their needs.
The time it takes to receive NDIS funding for assistive technology can vary depending on a number of factors. It’s important to plan ahead and apply for funding well in advance of when the equipment is needed.
If your child’s needs change and they require different assistive technology, you can work with your Occupational Therapist or other healthcare professional to update your child’s NDIS plan and request funding for the new equipment.

Six years ago, Angela started Evolve with a simple goal: to provide high quality occupational therapy services that were practical, personalised and centred around the needs of each individual and family.
What began as one therapist and a small client base has grown into a team of 13, supporting children, adults and families across Perth.
Over the past six years, we’ve learnt a lot. We’ve grown in size, expanded our services and developed our knowledge and areas of expertise. While much has changed, the values that shaped Evolve from the beginning remain the same.
We remain passionate about providing thoughtful, evidence-based occupational therapy support that helps people participate more fully in the activities and roles that matter most to them.
We’re equally committed to creating a workplace where our team can continue to learn, grow and enjoy the work they do.
A belated celebration of Evolve’s 6th birthday, and a heartfelt thank you to our clients, families, referrers and team members who have been part of the journey.
